Ground breakers, history makers!
On behalf of everyone from the Monash University Blues Football Club, we would like to congratulate Ashes' legends and great mates Molly McFarlane (left) and Eliza Millen (right) who will both run out for their 100th games tomorrow against West Brunswick. They are the first players from our Women’s Program to reach the 100 game milestone and we are unbelievably proud.
Both Eliza and Molly have been great servants of the Club since the commencement of the Monash Blues' Women’s football program, contributing both on and off the field.
Molly McFarlane
A two-time premiership player - captaining us to the 2022 Reserves Premiership - and elite full forward, Molly McFarlane becomes one of the first Women’s players to reach the 100 game milestone at the Monash Blues Football Club. Molly is an original member of the Women’s football program, playing in the our 2016 exhibition match (appropriately against tomorrow's opponent - West Brunswick) and then in our inaugural VAFA team in 2017. A well-loved member of the Club, Molly is known for her unparalleled read on the game, silky skills and a crafty goal from any angle. This year Molly has also taken on the position of Reserves Coach showing her ongoing commitment to the program. Thank you, Molly, for all you’ve done for the Club, and a huge congratulations on this historic achievement!
Eliza Millen
A pioneer of Monash Women's football, Eliza Millen tomorrow becomes one of the first Women’s players to reach 100 games at the Monash Blues Football Club. A member of the inaugural Women’s team in 2017, Eliza is a two-time premiership defender. Known for her strong on-field leadership, elite right foot and shut down defense, Eliza has established herself as a pillar in the backline. Aside from her talents on the field, Eliza has contributed significantly to the running of the Club through her role on the committee. The Club and the Women’s program would not be what it is today without Eliza’s time and effort. Congratulations on an incredible achievement and creating history this weekend!
Addendum: as part of the match day celebrations of the two milestones, teammate Ella Stephenson read the following poem to our Women's program's inaugural 100 gamers.
In the heart of Monash, where legends grow,
Two stars arise, their names you’ll know.
Eliza and Molly, side by side,
A hundred games, a historic stride.
When the women's team was just a dream,
Eliza and Molly joined the Monash Blues' team.
Now a hundred games later, they stand tall,
Pioneers and champions, inspiring us all.
From game one to a hundred, they’ve both been grand,
In the hearts of Monash, their legacy stands.
With skill and spirit, they’ve shown their might,
Now let’s celebrate their journey, and their individual light.
First, we turn to Molly, from Wodonga she came,
At Deakin Hall, she quickly made her name.
The original VAFA media star, in club kit she shone,
Number 35 on her back, her passion well-known.
In the first exhibition, against West Brunswick she played,
Her leadership and skill, in every game displayed.
Captained the ressies to a premiership win,
Now coaching and playing, she leads with a grin.
A Collingwood supporter, through thick and thin,
On the field, the M-Train, with a cheeky grin.
When she kicks a snag, we all shout “Choo Choo,”
Her snap goals are magic, her talent shines through.
Now let's turn to Eliza, from Robinvale's lands,
Her parents’ almond farm, where she first took her stands.
From Clarendon College in Ballarat, she did rise,
Playing school footy, her skills reaching the skies.
At Mannix College, she was loved by all,
A committee member, answering the club's call.
Organizing socials, our Function Queen supreme,
Off the field and on, she’s part of the team.
Number 21 in the backline, she defends with might,
Stopping goals, chatting up her opponent, a delightful sight.
Fiercely loyal to friends and teammates, she brings cheer,
Voice, enthusiasm, and fun, all hold her dear.
Since 2017, not a game she's missed,
Eliza's presence on and off the field, truly blessed.
Together since 2017, their friendship grew strong,
On and off the field, where they both belong.
In 2022, they made history with pride,
Winning the reserves premiership, side by side.
In 2023, they soared even higher,
A senior premiership, fueling their fire.
Off the field, Molly, an English teacher, a wordsmith so fine,
Eliza, a lawyer in employment law, helping clients shine.
Their journey together, a remarkable blend,
Eliza and Molly, teammates and friends.
