Three Hundred Matches for Club Legend

Thursday 20 June 2024

The Monash University Blues Football Club passes on its congratulations to Shane “Muncha” Chapman, who this weekend becomes the first Monash Blues player to play 300 games for the Club.

Shane started out at the Ashes as a peroxide blonde haired surf-necklace wearing under 19 in 2001, and was soon part of the premiership winning Under 19s team of 2002. Shane then went back-to-back in 2003 as part of the winning D1 seniors premiership side. A long period without premiership success followed which was more than compensated for off-field, with Muncha’s footy trip antics and enjoyment of club events always making him the life of the party. After a long drought between flags for the Club, Shane’s third premiership as a player then occurred in 2018 as player-coach of the winning fourths premiership team. Shane then capped off these achievements by coaching the Monash Women’s side to B Section premiership glory in 2023 and promotion to A Grade!

The Club is proud to see the evolution of Shane throughout his time at the Ashes, his dedication to both the Club and his fitness have allowed him to achieve this significant milestone. Shane has put up his hand over the course of his career to assist in a significant number of coaching and committee roles across Monash football, and for all his devotion, knowledge and passion for the Club we are eternally grateful. Shane has won the Best Club Person award three times in addition to being a life member of the Club. He always has time for others and the best interests of the Ashes at heart.

On field Shane is known for his hard attack on the ball, footy smarts, a knack for kicking an important goal and team-first ethos. He has won 8 best & fairests in his time at the Club (including winning both the thirds and fourths B&Fs in 2022) and a variety of other team awards. He has enjoyed strong support from his parents, his brother Nibbler who he played in a flag alongside and his wife Sarah-Jade who also he coached to a flag. They are all used to seeing Muncha with his customary head bandage covering the latest gaping wound or bloodied nose. Shane always brings others with him on the ride, through his competitiveness and ferocity or his customary inspirational addresses.

The entire Monash Blues community sends its best wishes to Shane in his 300th game – congratulations on this magnificent milestone!
